Here's Why This Knock

Jul 01, 2023

This Chinese VW Beetle knock-off runs red lights and they're not the kind you're thinking of

Every once in a while, something will come along and make you think; is that for real; can this be true? That is what happened when the Ora Ballet Cat debuted in the Chinese Car Market earlier this year. A clear tribute, if you will, to the classic Volkswagen Beetle, the Ballet Cat has been designed not just to target the female demographic, but to go after them and hit them hard with no subtleties.

It tells a man, not to buy this car and if you do, you are probably not identifying correctly. 171 horsepower from its single front-mounted motor and the 300-mile range are the sort of details that have a low priority. Its visual similarities to the bug are spot on and the United States shouldn't care if this Chinese company imitates a popular German car. Who cares?

The marketing behind the Ballet Cat is not ideal but playing little sister to the Ora Punk Cat gives you an idea of where the Chinese car company is going with this. The Chinese automaker has the his and hers type thing going, so if you‘re inclined to say the Ballet Cat is sexist, which it is, well then so is the Punk. Again, who cares? Ok, so maybe Volkswagen cares, just a little.

Not that the car is considered sexist, but of the design of the vehicle. At one point. Volkswagen said they would explore legal action for what they consider a blatant rip-off of their classic Beetle. Some will never understand that imitation is the highest form of flattery. In all honesty, ORA very well might have improved the original design by adding an extra set of doors.

Forget about getting the Ballet Cat in a cool black or red, nope, they only come in soft pastel colors, something that is pleasing to the female eye. Think pink, or baby blue, as if preparing for a gender reveal party. A small difference in the exterior between the Ballet Cat and the Beetle would be the headlights. Ora installed a squarer light as opposed to the round ones Volkswagen uses.

That has no direction toward the female, but the placement of the door handles does. They were lowered a few inches because naturally, women are shorter than men; so, to them, it would make sense that they are just a tad lower. Tall Chinese women are not buying the Ballet Cat.

Inside the car, you will find the same soothing pastel colors throughout the seats and doors, along with a smaller steering wheel, for smaller hands, lighted vanity mirrors, and of course, something that is essential in this female ride, a full make-up case in the center console to put those mirrors to use.

There is a wireless charging station that is surrounded by a fake gaudy crystal that would make Kim Kardashian blush along with lady-friendly features that most cars have anyway and are given sexist names to either boost sales or scream for attention.

China is now allowing married couples to have a maximum of three children and knowing that there will be an increase in inhabitants that possess the X Chromosome, ORA, owners of the Ballet Cat and the rest of the litter, are going hard at the demographic with sexist and misandristic features in the infotainment system that shouts ‘I am Woman, Hear Me Roar’.

It's more like, I’m a girl, listen to me purr. Here is a major feature not to be soon forgotten. Women driving while menstruating can give other motorists a sense of anxiety, discomfort, and fear, along with having these same feelings themselves could be dangerous on the roads. ORA has that all figured out with their ‘Warm Man Mode’, it is a special feature that raises the climate control to warm the female's mind and body and refrains the woman from panicking in certain situations.

On those happy days when there is no one bleeding anywhere, the Ballet Cat also comes with a ‘Selfie Camera’ feature, so the women can document themselves putting on their make-up while sitting in traffic. Or going 75 miles per hour on the highway, depends on the chick.

These pictures will be directly uploaded to social media. That way everyone can see your last photo and wonder, 'What if she wasn't on her phone while she was driving?' Not everything needs immediate attention, but you know what does; paying attention to your driving.

The women-friendly configurations do not stop there. If you thought ORA must have more ways of pissing off one gender while alienating the other, then you would be correct. The Ballet Cat is telling women "You cannot drive without our help" and nothing supports that statement more than the implementation of the ‘Lady Driving Mode’.

Car News China states that this will make driving easier for women and the features are voice-controlled parking, voice-controlled reversing, keeping a safe distance from cars in front of them, along with an extra warning system for fatigued driving. Now, many of these features come standard in new cars today, but naming is everything. Think of it, what long-haul semi-truck driver wouldn't love a warning system when they are starting to get tired?

Adding to the female-friendly features in this car would be one that is called ‘Wind and Wave Mode’. This is not so much sexist as much as it is needed in today's new cars. Under bad weather, the car itself will close the windows, adjust the air conditioning and automatically adjust the wipers. Speed them up or slow them down, the car will do as it sees fit. It will also further increase the distance between cars in inclement weather keeping it safe for both driver and passengers.

The knock-off Beetle is not that bad of a car, however, it has no place in the United States and that has nothing at all to do with being the world's ‘Most Sexist Car’. There are already too many things here that are made in China and break almost immediately. We don't need to start adding automobiles to that long list of junk made in China. AAA would be inundated with phone calls.

Sexism is alive and well in the world and the ORA Ballet Cat proves that; if you have an issue with it, who cares? Don't buy it, it's obvious ORA is not going to listen to you.
